The black line makes it easy to locate where the hole in the brass core is located. On the horizontal thrusters the black line (hole) must face down to maximize the useful life of the cartridge and prevent premature failure. For vertical thrusters, the hole is at the lowest point and the orientation of the black line (hole) does not matter.
