Can you use the Smart Tether without the ROV?

You can use the Smart Tether without the ROV, but there are some configuration issues:

Pro 4

  1. Make sure the tether is sealed.  If you don’t have a tether plug, you could leave the ROV connected if the diver can carry it, but then you might as well leave the ROV running too.
  2. Start Smart Tether from the Windows Start->All Programs menu.  Do NOT start it from VideoRay Cockpit.
  3. When you start Smart Tether, you will need to change the COM port for the tether.  Use Device Manager to find the COM port number for the SeaLevel device (it might show as SeaLink) under Ports.  If you have more the one SeaLevel device, you may need to use trial and error.
  4. Start Smart Tether and from the menu selection Tools->Communications Settings, record the current COM port (which should be COM 16) and then change the Smart Tether COM port to match the SeaLevel port number found in step 3.
  5. When you start tracking, you will get an error on Node 1 (which is the ROV).  Go to Tools->Diagnostics, uncheck the enable button for Node 1.  You will need to repeat this step each time you start tracking.
  6. When you are using the Smart Tether without the ROV, the position will be accurate, but the heading will not.
  7. When you want to restore use with the ROV, you will need to reset the COM port for the Smart Tether to COM 16 (or the COM port recorded in step 3 if not COM 16).

Pro 3

The Pro 3 version of the Smart Tether can be used without the ROV, but you will still need to make sure the ROV tether connection is sealed as directed in step 1 above.  You should not have to change the COM port, or disable Node 1.
